Imperiale has been sought by authorities since 2016 for alleged money laundering and international drug trafficking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was able to construct an imposing network,\u2019\u2019 investigators said. Interior minister Luciana Lamorgese called Imperiale \u201ca top exponent of international drug trafficking and money laundering, who accumulated huge amounts of illicit wealth thanks above all to cocaine sales.\u201d Throughout his exploits, his ties to the influential Camorra families helped him survive various feuds among the Naples clans.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, Italian authorities recovered two van Gogh paintings stolen in 2002 from an Amsterdam museum devoted to the artist. The works,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.atelierauction.com\/globalupdates\/\"><em>View of the Sea at Scheveningen\u00a0<\/em>(1882) and\u00a0<\/a><em>Congregation Leaving the Reformed Church in Nuenen\u00a0<\/em>(1884\u201385), had been stashed in a farmhouse on land owned by Imperiale in the town of his birth, Castellammare di Stabia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe wealth illicitly accumulated allowed him to buy on the black market two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atelierauction.com\/globalupdates\/\">Van Gogh<\/a> paintings of unquantifiable value,\u201d police said. Earlier this year, Imperiale gave an interview to the Neapolitan newspaper\u00a0<em>Il Mattino<\/em>\u00a0in which he denied any involvement in the theft, but admitted to having bought both works.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s23rjr\">\u201cI bought them directly from the thief, because the price was attractive.
