Halston Archive to Auction Ephemera to Benefit Fashion Scholarship Fund<\/i>
\nItems from the archive of fashion designer\u00a0Halston<\/b>\u00a0will be offered 44 items from his estate at an auction this September at Phillips. The grouping includes illustrations by the designer and his long-time creative director Joe Eula, alongside photographs by Helmut Newton and Bill Cunningham and works on paper by Victor Hugo and Joan Mir\u00f3. Carrying estimates between $500\u2013$35,000, the works will be sold in an online sale that will run from September 9\u201316. Proceeds from the auction will benefit a fashion scholarship initiative funded by the Halston archive.\u00a0Leslie Frowick<\/b><\/a>, Halston\u2019s niece and the archive\u2019s CEO and founder, said in a statement, \u201cThe archives are flush with historic material, peppered with a few special art pieces that illustrate his symbiosis with other distinguished artists of his day.\u201d<\/div>\n

NYFA Names Photography Fellowship Recipients \u00a0<\/em>
\nThe\u00a0New York Foundation for the Arts\u00a0has announced the five winners of\u00a0the\u00a0JGS Fellowship for Photography<\/strong>,\u00a0which goes to five New York State\u2013based photographers and comes with grants of $7,000.\u00a0This year\u2019s fellows are\u00a0Adrianna Ault<\/strong>,\u00a0Ryan Frigillana<\/strong>,\u00a0ITENJI,\u00a0Adrian Javon<\/strong>,\u00a0and\u00a0Funmi Oladipo<\/strong>. In a statement, NYFA executive director\u00a0Michael L. Patrisse Cullors Joins Los Angeles Arts Commission<\/i>
\nArtist, writer and activist\u00a0Patrisse Cullors<\/b>\u00a0has joined the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors\u2019\u00a0Art Commission<\/b><\/a>\u00a0advisory body for the art. A co-founder of the Black Lives Matter Global Network, Cullors has founded led many L.A.-based social justice organizations, including Dignity and Power Now, Justice LA, and Reform LA Jails. She also recently co-founded the Crenshaw Dairy Mart, an artist collective and gallery dedicated to intertwining advocacy and cultural work in Inglewood, California and\u00a0 developed the Social and Environmental Arts Practice MFA program at Prescott College in Arizona. In a statement, Cullors said,\u00a0 \u201cI am invested and committed to weaving community solidarity in the Second District, and more broadly in Los Angeles County, through art and culture.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

UCCA Will Expand in Beijing, Open in Chengdu<\/i>
\nThe\u00a0UCCA Center for Contemporary Art<\/b><\/a>\u00a0in China said that it will expand its presence in Beijing, where it has operated since 2007, by adding exhibition space in a shopping mall in the country\u2019s capital. The institution will also open a new branch in\u00a0Chengdu<\/b>, which is set to open 2024. The UCCA also has locations in Beidaihe and Shanghai.<\/div>\n

Denver Art Museum Receives $25 M. Endowment Gift<\/i>
\nThe\u00a0Denver Art Museum<\/b>\u00a0in Colorado has received a $25 million donation from an anonymous donor to support its textile art and fashion department. The money will be divided, with $15 million going to support the DAM\u2019s ongoing programming, research, and preservation of its textile collection and the remaining $10 million will be used to create an endowment fund for new acquisitions. The gift also establishes a new institute of textile art and fashion, which will be led by\u00a0Florence M\u00fcller,<\/b>\u00a0the museum\u2019s curator of textile art and fashion. In a statement, DAM director\u00a0Christoph Heinrich<\/b>\u00a0said, \u201cThe goals of the new institute are to support the development and sharing of the museum\u2019s Textile Art and Fashion collection and create a basis for scholarly research and exchange in ways that are engaging and valuable for our community.\u201d<\/div>\n

Huntington Library and Museum Names Associate Curator of American Art<\/i><\/div>\n
The\u00a0Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens<\/b>\u00a0in San Marino, California\u00a0has appointed\u00a0Yinshi Lerman-Tan\u00a0<\/b>as its new associate curator of American art. Lerman-Tan is currently\u00a0 associate curator of American and European art at the San Antonio Museum of Art in Texas and a postdoctoral fellow at Trinity University in San Antonio. Steven Shearer Is Now Represented by\u00a0David Zwirner<\/em>
\nDavid Zwirner<\/strong>, one of the world\u2019s biggest galleries, now represents\u00a0Steven Shearer<\/strong>, who is known for his figurative paintings that pay homage to Edvard Munch, Romanticism, heavy metal music, and more. Shearer, who formerly showed in New York with the now-defunct Gavin Brown\u2019s Enterprise, will continue to be represented by\u00a0Galerie Eva Presenhuber<\/strong>. He represented Canada at the Venice Biennale in 2011, and is set to have shows at Eva Presenhuber in Zurich and the\u00a0Polygon Gallery<\/strong>\u00a0in Vancouver in September and November, respectively. \u201cI am thrilled to be working with Steven Shearer, an artist whose work I\u2019ve followed for many years,\u201d said dealer David Zwirner in a statement. \u201cSteven is a true artist\u2019s artist and his work defies easy categorization.\u201d<\/p>\n

Black Art Futures Fund Announces 2021 Grant Recipients<\/em>
\nThe\u00a0Black Art Futures Fund<\/strong>\u00a0has awarded over $40,000 in grants to Black-led art organizations that have been serving Black creators and communities for at least ten years. The recipients of its sixth funding cycle are New York nonprofit publisher\u00a0African Voices Communications<\/strong>; the collaborative performance group\u00a0Angela\u2019s Pulse<\/strong>; and the\u00a0Memphis Black Arts Alliance<\/strong>. Each organization will receive grants of $10,000 to support programming and general operating costs. The Philadelphia-based dance company\u00a0Dance Iquail<\/strong>, a member of the 2020 grantee cohort, will also receive a second round of funding.<\/p>\n

Destination Crenshaw<\/a>\u00a0Names 7 Artist Commissions for Crenshaw Boulevard
\n<\/em>Destination Crenshaw<\/strong>, a community-led project founded in 2017 that makes direct investments to local small businesses and builds green community gathering places and parks, has announced the initial seven artists who have been commissioned to create outdoor public artworks along a 1.3-mile stretch of Crenshaw Boulevard in the historically Black neighborhood in Los Angeles. With eventual plans to commission some 100 artists, the seven artists, all of whom have close ties in South Los Angeles, are\u00a0Charles Dickson<\/strong>,\u00a0Melvin Edwards<\/strong>,\u00a0Maren Hassinger<\/strong>,\u00a0Artis Lane<\/strong>,\u00a0Alison Saar<\/strong>,\u00a0Kehinde Wiley<\/strong>, and\u00a0Brenna Youngblood<\/strong>. Destination Crenshaw will submit the artists\u2019 proposals to the City of Los Angeles\u2019s Cultural Affairs Commission in October for review and approval.<\/p>\n

Kraupa-Tuskany Zeidler Now Represents Brook Hsu<\/i>
\nBrook Hsu<\/b>, who is known for her multimedia explorations of pre-Christian myths, is now represented by the Berlin-based gallery\u00a0Kraupa-Tuskany Zeidler<\/b>. The Taiwanese-American artist will also continue to be represented by the Hong Kong\u2013based\u00a0Edouard Malingue Gallery<\/b>. Hsu, whose solo exhibition\u00a0at Krauoa-Tuskany Zeidler is opening tomorrow, employs painting, textile, sculpture, and text to explore the meeting point of the personal and mythological. A book of her works,\u00a0Norwegian Wood<\/i>, is set to be released next week.<\/p>\n

Julia Stoschek Foundation Names Members of Advisory Board<\/i>
\nThe\u00a0Julia Stoschek Foundation<\/b>, the organization that manages the collection of the eponymous German collector, has named the five people who will constitute its advisory board. They are artists\u00a0Meriem Bennani<\/b><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Arthur Jafa<\/b>;\u00a0Chrissie Iles<\/b>, a curator at the Whitney Museum;\u00a0Andrea Lissoni<\/b>, director of the Haus der Kunst; and\u00a0Udo Kittelmann<\/b>, director of the Museum Frieder Burda. They will help oversee the holdings of Julia Stoschek, who is known for her collection of time-based art and has ranked on the\u00a0ARTnews<\/i>\u00a0Top 200 Collectors list each year since 2012.<\/p>\n

Governors Island Art Fair\u00a0Cancels 2021 Edition<\/i>
\nThe 2021 edition of the\u00a0Governors Island Art Fair<\/strong>\u00a0in New York has been canceled by the artist-led nonprofit\u00a04heads<\/b>,\u00a0which cited concerns about the spread of the Delta variant of Covid-19. The event was originally slated to take place from September 8 through 13 on Colonels Row on New York\u2019s Governors Island, with 34 participating artists. It was to coincide with the Armory Show, which is still set to take place largely in person. 4heads has announced plans to stage the next edition of its fair on Governors Island in September 2022, while the artists who planned to present work at the 2021 fair will continue with the 4heads residency program, which concludes this November.<\/p>\n

Frick Collection Receives Major Gift of Drawings and Pastels<\/i>
\nThe\u00a0Frick Collection<\/b>\u00a0in New York has received a gift of 26 drawings and pastels\u201418 drawings, 5 pastels, 2 prints, and an oil sketch\u2014from the collection of museum trustees Elizabeth \u201cBetty\u201d and Jean-Marie Eveillard. The works range from the end of the 15th century to the 20th century, and represent prominent European artists, including Gustave Caillebotte, Edgar Degas, Eug\u00e8ne Delacroix, Francisco de Goya, John Singer Sargent, and \u00c9lisabeth Vig\u00e9e Le Brun. The museum will present an exhibition of these works in fall 2022 at its temporary Frick Madison location.<\/p>\n

Barbara Hammer<\/a>\u00a0Estate Announces Executive Director<\/i>
\nLouky Keijsers Koning<\/b>\u00a0has been appointed as the first executive director of the\u00a0Barbara Hammer\u00a0<\/b>estate. During her lifetime, Hammer received many awards for her groundbreaking experiment films, many of which considered forms of intimacy from a lesbian point of view. The artist died in 2019 and is survived by her wife, Florrie Burke, who heads the estate.\u00a0Keijsers Koning was the founder of LMAKgallery, which she ran for 15 years before switching her focus to art appraisal. At the estate, she will work with Hammer\u2019s two gallery representatives\u2014KOW in Berlin and Company in New York\u2014to manage exhibitions of the artist\u2019s work.<\/p>\n

Getty Museum Acquires Ken Gonzales-Day Photographs<\/i>
\nThe\u00a0Getty Museum<\/b>\u00a0in Los Angeles has acquired six photographs by\u00a0Ken Gonzales-Day<\/b>. Three are from Gonzales-Day\u2019s series \u201cSearching for California Hang Trees\u201d and \u201cMemento Mori,\u201d which focus on the histories of lynching in California and the victims of this violence, many of whom were BIPOC or Latinx.
