{"id":1285,"date":"2021-10-15T08:22:51","date_gmt":"2021-10-15T00:22:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.atelierauction.com\/globalupdates\/?p=1285"},"modified":"2021-10-08T10:27:51","modified_gmt":"2021-10-08T02:27:51","slug":"google-initiative-digitally-recreates-three-lost-klimt-paintings-using-ai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.atelierauction.com\/globalupdates\/artist\/google-initiative-digitally-recreates-three-lost-klimt-paintings-using-ai\/","title":{"rendered":"Google Initiative Digitally Recreates Three Lost Klimt Paintings Using AI"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Google Arts &amp; Culture has launched a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.atelierauction.com\/globalupdates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">new interactive hub<\/a>\u00a0called \u201cKlimt vs. Klimt \u2013 The Man of Contradictions,\u201d\u00a0which will\u00a0offer visitors insight into\u00a0<a id=\"auto-tag_gustav-klimt\" href=\"https:\/\/www.atelierauction.com\/globalupdates\/\" data-tag=\"gustav-klimt\">Gustav Klimt<\/a>\u2019s biography, artistic inspiration, legacy, and more, along with scholarly articles penned by experts at Austria\u2019s top institutions, including the Belvedere and the Wien Museum.<\/p>\n<p>As part of its efforts, Google also digitally recreated three of Klimt\u2019s lost works from 1899, using artificial intelligence technology to colorize black-and-white photography of the works.<\/p>\n<p>The three paintings\u2014<em>Medicine<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Philosophy<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>Jurisprudence<\/em>\u2014together form the \u201cFaculty Paintings,\u201d which was commissioned by the University of Vienna. Upon the works\u2019 unveiling, university officials deemed them \u201cpornographic\u201d and \u201cperverse.\u201d They were ultimately sold to a private buyer.<\/p>\n<p>In 1945, during the final days of World War II in Europe, the paintings were lost in a fire, and they now survive only in the form of black-and-white photographs. (In a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.atelierauction.com\/globalupdates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">post<\/a>\u00a0on the hub, the Austrian National Library looks at the mysterious circumstances of the fire that claimed the works.)<\/p>\n<p>With the support of Google, Klimt scholars and\u00a0<a id=\"auto-tag_ai\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/AtelierAuctionsg\" data-tag=\"ai\">AI<\/a>\u00a0researchers came together to bring color to these enigmatic paintings.\u00a0Franz Smola, a curator at the Belvedere, worked with Emil Wallner, a resident at the Google Arts &amp; Culture Lab, to develop an algorithm that could accurately recolor the \u201cFaculty Paintings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>First, Smola combed through various archives to find documentation describing the works, especially their coloration. He then looked for motifs present in the \u201cFaculty Paintings\u201d that could also be found in similar paintings of Klimt\u2019s from the same time period. For example, the three women in\u00a0<i>Jurisprudence<\/i>\u00a0are wrapped in snakes, similar to the artist\u2019s\u00a0<i>Beethoven Frieze\u00a0<\/i>(1902), in which\u00a0a woman is also surrounded by serpents colored in his trademark gold leaf. These parallels helped Smola and his team to vaguely sketch the color profiles used in parts of the paintings.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Wallner began putting together an algorithm that was trained to do a statistical analysis of Klimt\u2019s coloring style. The obstacles and breakthroughs of this machine learning process are described in an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/AtelierAuctionsg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">article<\/a>\u00a0by Wallner.<\/p>\n<p>Using a huge data set (1 million pictures of the real world and 91,749 image of artworks by various artists), the algorithm ascertained a sense of skin tones and the hues of the sky from the real world images, and a sense of composition, object boundaries, and textures from the paintings. Added to that initial data set were 80 full-color reproductions of Klimt paintings, meant to key the algorithm in to the Vienna Secession artist\u2019s style.
