Declared an item of cultural interest, the new protected status will give experts additional time to study the painting in the hopes of determining its true authorship, as it was previously believed to be a mere copy.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, the regional government of Madrid described the painting as \u201can example of the excellence and pictorial mastery of the Italian naturalism,\u201d with significant influence on 17th-century painting in the region.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The painting, titled\u00a0<em>The Crowning of Thorns<\/em>,\u00a0made headlines earlier this year\u00a0when it was pulled from an auction lot at Ansorena auction house in Madrid and further protected with an export ban issued by the Spanish government. Days before the sale, the Prado Museum contacted the Spanish Ministry of Culture with evidence suggesting that the piece may have been painted by the master himself. Until that point,\u00a0<em>The Crowning of Thorns\u00a0<\/em>had been attributed to the workshop of 17th-century painter Jos\u00e9 de Ribera, an admirer of Caravaggio who also known in Italian as \u201cLo Spagnoletto\u201d or the Little Spaniard, with an opening bid of 1,500 euros. If, in fact, the work is a Caravaggio, it would be valued at roughly 50 million euros.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>The Crowning of Thorns\u00a0<\/em>is currently owned by the three children of Madrid\u2019s IADE design school founder Antonio P\u00e9rez de Castro and artist Mercedes M\u00e9ndez Atard. The painting\u2019s new protected status requires them to inform local authorities should they decide to sell it, thereby allowing the government the opportunity to purchase the work. While analyses among scholars are expected to continue, the regional government noted, \u201cThe information that has appeared over the past few months, together with the studies undertaken by experts, reinforces the theory that it is the work of Caravaggio.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Previously, layers of dirt had obscured key details but, once cleaned, it became apparent that the painting bears Caravaggio\u2019s trademark style. For example, Carravagio employed signature techniques such as\u00a0<em>chiaroscuro\u2014<\/em>the use of dramatic lighting and shadowing\u2014throughout his oeuvre. The presence of this technique in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/AtelierAuctionsg\"><em>The Crowning of Thorns<\/em><\/a>\u00a0was was cited as evidence when it was pulled from the auction in April.
