Maybe it\u2019s her ubiquity in the Southwest American imagination that makes people forget that there\u2019s more to learn about Georgia O\u2019Keeffe.\u00a0The patron saint of nature\u2019s sickly, sensual side, O\u2019Keeffe created some of the most iconic paintings of the last century. A new show at the\u00a0Museum of Modern Art<\/a>\u00a0in New York, however, will shed light on how those\u00a0canvases\u00a0are indebted to a Darwinian investigation that she began long before on paper.<\/p>\n

Opening next April, \u201cGeorgia O\u2019Keeffe: To See Takes Time\u201d will gather more than 120 rarely seen works on paper that demonstrate how the artist\u00a0used charcoal, watercolor, pastel, and graphite to revisit and riff on organic forms. It will be the first museum show to explore O\u2019Keeffe\u2019s serial process and\u2014somewhat incredibly\u2014the first exhibition devoted to her at MoMA since 1946. Several of O\u2019Keeffe paintings related to the drawings will also be on view.<\/p>\n

\u201cO\u2019Keeffe is a well-loved and not often sufficiently understood artist,\u201d Samantha Friedman, the show\u2019s curator,\u00a0told\u00a0ARTnews<\/em>\u00a0in a phone interview. \u201cI included a charcoal drawing of O\u2019Keeffe\u2019s in our [2020] show \u2018Degree Zero,\u2019 and people were shocked to learn it was hers. It did not correspond to their expectation of this artist\u2019s work.\u201d<\/p>\n

O\u2019Keeffe, the painter of lush, close-up flowers and craggy mountains, first began her career as an artist by making charcoal drawings. In 1915, while working as an art teacher,\u00a0long before she achieved fame, she began making sweeping and curving tendrils of charcoal across multiple sheets of paper. The result suggested ripples of water, smoke, or primordial soup. She dubbed the series \u201cSpecials.\u201d<\/p>\n

A friend of hers brought the drawings to photographer and influential gallerist Alfred Stieglitz (her future husband), who called them the \u201cpurest, finest, sincerest things\u201d to have entered his establishment in several years. He exhibited them without her knowledge, which made her first furious\u2014and then famous.<\/p>\n

O\u2019Keeffe produced most of her works on paper from 1915 to 1918. By the 1930s,\u00a0O\u2019Keeffe was renowned for her painted studies of the natural world, most of which capture static extremes, like blooming flowers or animal skulls\u00a0bleached by time. However, \u201cnature doesn\u2019t happen in an instant<\/a>,\u201d\u00a0Friedman said.<\/p>\n

In her wealth of correspondence, O\u2019Keeffe described the joyful \u201crecklessness<\/a>\u201d of paper compared to canvas, where consequences carry weight. Paper was the place to develop motifs and search for the essence of her subjects. Sometimes she dragged distinct bands of watercolor to watch the pigments bleed into the sort of fleeting gradients found at the horizon.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow can you chart a course of a sunset in a single sheet? You need multiple to see it rise and fall,\u201d Friedman added.<\/p>\n

Among the key works in the exhibition are\u00a0No. 8 \u2013 Special (Drawing No. 8)<\/em>, from 1916, that resembles an inky typhoon; a reunion of luminous watercolors from her 1917 series of responses to the Texas sky; and\u00a0Drawing X<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(1959), created the year O\u2019Keeffe made a three-month trip around the world and that is inspired by her view from the airplane\u2019s window. Here the boundary of representation and abstraction blur spectacularly\u2014the whole of the landscape has been distilled to two wandering lines.<\/p>\n

\u201cGeorgia O\u2019Keeffe: To See Takes Time\u201d is set to run from April 9\u2014August 12, 2023, at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.<\/em><\/p>\n
