Norwegian artist\u00a0Ane Graff<\/a>\u00a0is becoming increasingly known for her works that consider the body\u2019s internal world and the countless outside forces that might interrupt it.<\/p>\n

In a new group of works presented by Oslo-based dealer\u00a0OSL Contemporary<\/a>\u00a0at the\u00a02022 Armory Show<\/a>, Graff undertakes a close examination of materials found in household spaces and outdoor repositories. The works, all made this year, trace the ways in which such materials are capable of wreaking silent havoc on bodies and natural settings.<\/p>\n

Situated in the booth, alongside four silk-printed paintings, is a series of Graff\u2019s glass sculptures expanding on her 2021 work\u00a0The Goblets<\/em>\u00a0(Chronic Fatigue, Brain Fog, Depression, Memory Loss, and Generalised Anxiety Disorder)<\/em><\/a>, each of which is named for various disorders related to mental ailments. In the installation, a group of crystal cups have been filled with vibrant concoctions that appear like the kind of poisonous matter found only in natural settings. Cased in glass bell jars and displayed on painted white tables like clinical experiments, these works draw on Graff\u2019s research into the environmental factors that can have corrosive effects on a person\u2019s mental states.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt did take me quite a while of experimentation to come to a place where I could start to make visible how both the materials and our bodies become something new through their exposures through a mutual touch,\u201d Graff told\u00a0ARTnews<\/em>. \u201cFor me, that\u2019s what the goblets make visible\u2014they are materials coming together creating new growths.\u201d<\/p>\n

The artist\u2019s sleek aesthetic adds to the works\u2019 dystopian tones. Each cup is filled with material pollutants linked to disease that are found in everyday materials, ranging from medications and cosmetics to food and road dust. Graff invokes feminist thinkers, considering the ways in which materials interact through various channels with the body\u2019s functions. A core tenet of the relatively recent feminist \u201cnew materialist\u201d thinking is that matter is multiple, without hierarchies, and that it moves between nature and culture, as well as bodies and environments.<\/p>\n

Graff brought a similar group of works\u2014a series of glass structures filled with assemblages of toxic materials found in instant coffee\u2014to the Nordic Pavilion at the 2019 edition of the Venice Biennale.<\/p>\n

Her works also draw on disasters that have generational effects. In\u00a0Goblet Panic<\/em>\u00a0Disorder<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(2022), the artist included soot deriving from a series of violent riots in 2013 that broke out in a Stockholm suburb heavily populated with immigrant families. The piece reflects Graff\u2019s preoccupation with epigenetics \u2013 the study of how behavior and environment can change the way genes function.<\/p>\n

\u201cSpecifically,\u00a0childhood trauma has been found to be involved in modifications in stress response genes,\u201d said Graff. \u201cThis riot directly involved hundreds of youths.\u201d<\/p>\n

The four silk paintings installed on the booth\u2019s walls, meanwhile, reference another process in which the body is harmed. The hand-painted wall hangings are covered in red and flesh tones that recall anatomical matter. For these works, Graff references the severe side effects produced when brain damage is caused by environmental factors.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese paintings came about after having spent time looking at light micrographs and illustrations of the blood brain barrier,\u201d she said. \u201cI wanted to work in a painterly manner allowing both a more subjective and poetic take on the imagery or illustrations of this subject, which often have quite a strange schematic stiffness and masculinity to them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Graff imagines the works as proxies for the body\u2014a place where mutations convene. \u201cI think of this process taking place in our bodies and want to shine a light on how our bodies are changing with all the materials we are exposed to.\u201d<\/p>\n
