The Headlines<\/strong><\/p>\n

ARTIST\u00a0MIRA LEHR<\/a>,<\/strong>\u00a0whose multifarious art tackled environmental issues, and who was involved in founding\u00a0Continuum<\/strong>, a cooperative gallery in Miami Beach, Florida, for women artists in 1966,\u00a0has died\u00a0at the age of 88,\u00a0Neil Genzlinger<\/strong>\u00a0reports in the\u00a0New York Times<\/em>. Powerfully influenced by her participation in a 1969 experiment by inventor\u00a0R. Buckminster Fuller\u00a0<\/strong>that looked at how to allocate natural resources, Lehr made work in a variety of mediums\u2014paint, video, gunpowder, and more\u2014that addresses ecosystems, animal life, and other topics. While being\u00a0profiled by the\u00a0Times<\/em>\u00a0in 2020, Lehr said, \u201cWe have to think of the loss and destruction and that there is more of this to come.\u201d<\/p>\n

SHOWTIME.<\/strong>\u00a0One of the most anticipated exhibitions of the season in New York has to be\u00a0Sarah Sze<\/strong>\u2019s outing at the\u00a0Guggenheim<\/strong>, which will open in March. In\u00a0WSJ Magazine<\/em>, the wily installation artist spoke about\u00a0what she has on tap<\/a>\u2014video projections on the outside of the building, for one thing\u2014with journalist\u00a0Ted Loos<\/strong>. \u201cI wanted to make pieces you could only do at the Guggenheim,\u201d Sze said. \u201cThe building became a tool for making the work.\u201d Meanwhile, painter and musician\u00a0Mike Henderson\u00a0<\/strong>spoke with\u00a0David Smith<\/strong>\u00a0in the\u00a0Guardian<\/em>\u00a0about\u00a0his just-opened show<\/a>\u00a0at the\u00a0University of California, Davis<\/strong>\u2019s art museum. It includes his \u201cprotest paintings\u201d from the 1960s to \u201880s, which look at racist violence in the United States. He knew they \u201cweren\u2019t going to hang in anybody\u2019s living room but the paintings were coming through me,\u201d he said. \u201cThere was a deeper calling.\u201d<\/p>\n

Workers repairing sewers in Rome made a startling discovery when a bulldozer tore through some old pipes: a statue that appears to depict the third-century emperor\u00a0Decius<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0posing as\u00a0Hercules<\/strong>.
