HISTORY\u2019S MYSTERIES, PART I.<\/strong>\u00a0The\u00a0Royal Museums Greenwich<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0in London has decided that a painting that it has kept in storage storage for decades, as the work of an unknown artist,\u00a0is actually by\u00a0the great\u00a0Thomas Gainsborough<\/a><\/strong>, the\u00a0Guardian<\/em>\u00a0reports. The collector\u00a0Edward Peter Jones<\/strong>\u00a0donated the portrait to the institution in 1960 with that attribution, but its then-curator believed it was \u201ctoo coarse to be his work,\u201d its present curator,\u00a0Katherine Gazzard<\/strong>, told the paper. The art historian\u00a0Hugh Belsey<\/strong>\u00a0recently asked to take a look at the oil on canvas, and freshly examined, it did, indeed, appear to be a Gainsborough. The RMG is aiming to raise \u00a360,000 (some $76,900) to do conservation work on the circa 1762 piece, which depicts the naval officer\u00a0Frederick Cornewall<\/strong>. The change in authorship is \u201ca reminder to take care over our judgments, to be rigorous,\u201d\u00a0Gazzard said. \u201cBut we\u2019re excited rather than embarrassed.\u201d<\/p>\n

HISTORY\u2019S MYSTERIES, PART II.<\/strong>\u00a0Speaking of exciting portrait discoveries: Those two\u00a0Rembrandts<\/strong>\u00a0portraits that were\u00a0found in a private collection, unknown to scholars,\u00a0sold for \u00a311.2 million<\/a>\u00a0($14.3 million) at\u00a0Christie\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0London on Thursday,\u00a0CNN<\/em>\u00a0reports. That result soundly surpassed the \u00a38 million ($10.2 million) high estimate that the auction house had given the works, which each measure about eight inches high and date to 1635. \u201cI think they are the smallest portraits that he painted that we know of,\u201d\u00a0Henry Pettifer<\/strong>, international deputy chair of Old Master paintings at Christie\u2019s, said.<\/p>\n

THE NEXT BIG THING.<\/strong>\u00a0The\u00a0Royal Academy of Arts<\/strong>\u00a0in London opens a show about architects\u00a0Jacques Herzog<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Pierre de Meuron<\/strong>\u00a0this week, and the former sat down for\u00a0a conversation in Venice<\/a>\u00a0with critic\u00a0Christopher Hawthorne<\/strong>\u00a0for the\u00a0New York Times<\/em>. It\u2019s a good one, and touches on, among other things, why hospital design is so bad. It\u2019s \u201cbecause it\u2019s been neglected by architects,\u201d Herzog said. \u201cHospitals are even worse than prisons. And as soon as people look at it, it has a chance to be better.
