He cordoned off 2,000 acres of the mountain and only made it accessible to people who own houses nearby for an annual fee between $30,000 and $100,000. Hastings did inherit $100 million of debt with his mountainous purchase, so he has to cut the deficit somehow.<\/p>\n<p>To show that he\u2019s also a man of the people, Hastings,\u00a0who is the chairman of Powder Mountain, has opened up the rest of the mountain to the hoi palloi. He also recently announced that Powder Mountain is developing a public art park that will be filled with large-scale sculptures and land artworks.<\/p>\n<p>Artists\u00a0<a id=\"auto-tag_james-turrell\" href=\"https:\/\/www.atelierauction.com\/globalupdates\/\" data-tag=\"james-turrell\">James Turrell<\/a>,\u00a0Nancy Holt,\u00a0<a id=\"auto-tag_jenny-holzer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.atelierauction.com\/globalupdates\/\" data-tag=\"jenny-holzer\">Jenny Holzer<\/a>, and\u00a0Paul McCarthy\u00a0have all been tapped to create works for the project, which is slated to open in 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">Turrell\u2019s walk-in light installation,\u00a0titled\u00a0<em>Ganzfeld Apani\u00a0<\/em>(2011),\u00a0was originally commissioned for the 2011 Venice Biennale and will be installed in a new trailside pavilion within the mountain\u2019s 156 ski runs and numerous hiking and biking trails.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\u201cAt Powder, we want every experience\u2014from the ski resort to the residential community to the outdoor art museum\u2014to be intentional, and the integration of art into the mountain is a manifestation of that consideration,\u201d Hastings said in the statement. \u201cWe aim to transform Powder into a multi-season destination that blends recreation, art, and meaningful connection for our entire community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/AtelierAuctionsg\">Matthew Thompson<\/a> is the director of Powder Mountain\u2019s new arts program. He conceived the initial plan alongside Alex Zhang, the company\u2019s chief creative officer, and independent curator Diana Nawi (who was appointed curator of contemporary art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in July).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">Utah native McCarthy<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>will create an immersive installation rooted in the mythology of the American West. McCarthy said he was \u201cexcited\u201d to be part of \u201cbuilding something special at Powder. \u201cI grew up in Utah, and the influence of Utah and its mountains has been a critical part of my work. A core subject, sitting in both my subconscious and conscious mind,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">Zhang described the artists involved as \u201csome of the most groundbreaking of our time\u201d and said their work will \u201crespond to the mountain\u2019s rugged topography.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/AtelierAuctionsg\">Arthur Jafa<\/a>, EJ Hill, Nikita Gale, Gala Porras-Kim, Davina Semo, and Raven Halfmoon have also been commissioned to create works for the project.
