Rockefeller Jr., whose family had commissioned the tapestry in the 1950s and lent it to the United Nations in 1985.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">St\u00e9phane Dujarric, a spokesman for Secretary General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres,\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/AtelierAuctionsg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told reporters on Friday<\/a>\u00a0that Mr. Rockefeller had recently requested the tapestry back, and that it had been returned to him earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel sad and a sense of loss looking at that empty wall,\u201d Mr. Dujarric said. \u201cThe tapestry was not only a moving reminder of the horrors of war but, because of where it stood, it was also a witness to so much history that unfolded outside of the Security Council since 1985.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"css-1fanzo5 StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">Mr. Dujarric said he had no information on why Mr. Rockefeller \u2014 a scion of the family that\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.atelierauction.com\/globalupdates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">gifted 16 acres of Manhattan\u2019s East Side to the United Nations for its headquarters<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 had wanted \u201cGuernica\u201d back. Messages left for Mr. Rockefeller at the Rockefeller Family Fund, the New York-based charitable foundation, were not immediately returned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">\u201cI can tell you the secretary general tried very hard to keep the tapestry here but we were not successful,\u201d Mr. Dujarric said, adding that Mr. Guterres would \u201creview options for other art\u201d to adorn the wall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">Mr. Guterres, who walked past the empty wall on Thursday to greet the new American ambassador, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, told CBS News that \u201cit\u2019s horrible, horrible that it is gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">Picasso\u2019s original painting, done in 1937 during the Spanish Civil War and now hanging in a Madrid museum after\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.atelierauction.com\/globalupdates\">a 42-year stay at the Museum of Modern Art\u00a0<\/a>in New York, depicted the bombing of Guernica, Spain, by Nazi German aircraft that nearly obliterated the city and killed or wounded a third of its population.<\/p>\n<p>The painting\u2019s haunting black-and-gray images of screaming humans and animals turned \u201cGuernica\u201d into an enduring symbol of war\u2019s monstrosities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Source\uff1ahttps:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The replica of Picasso\u2019s famed painting depicting the horrors of war had hung outside the Security Council chamber since 1985, on loan from the Rockefeller family.
