The Italian publication\u00a0<em>Arts Culture &amp; Style<\/em>\u00a0reports\u00a0that prosecutors have dropped charges against three people who had been suspected of being involved in the 1997 theft of Klimt\u2019s\u00a0<em>Portrait of a Lady<\/em>\u00a0(1916\u201317) from the Ricci Oddi Modern Art Gallery in Piacenza in northern Italy.<\/p>\n<p>The publication also reports that a judge will rule on the prosecutors\u2019 decision to drop the charges and that the case will likely remain cold.\u00a0<em>Portrait of a<\/em>\u00a0<em>Lady<\/em>, which is valued at $66 million, was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.atelierauction.com\/globalupdates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recovered<\/a>\u00a0in December 2019, after it was discovered to have been hidden behind a metal panel in the gallery\u2019s exterior wall. Experts subsequently confirmed the authenticity of the rediscovered work, and, in January 2020, two men\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.atelierauction.com\/globalupdates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">claimed<\/a>\u00a0to have been responsible for the heist\u2014and for the painting\u2019s return.<\/p>\n<p>At the time of its rediscovery at the Ricci Oddi Modern Art Gallery, Jonathan Papamerenghi, a member of the Piacenza council,\u00a0told the Italian publication\u00a0<em>La Repubblica\u00a0<\/em>that the work is \u201cthe most sought-after stolen painting in the world after Caravaggio\u2019s\u00a0<em>Nativity with St. Francis and St. Lawrence<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In November 2020, the storied painting\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/AtelierAuctionsg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">went back on view<\/a>\u00a0at the Ricci Oddi Modern Art Gallery for the first time since its disappearance. Just before it was stolen in 1997, X-ray analysis revealed that the canvas in fact contains two portraits, one of which was painted over by the artist.<\/p>\n<p>The Klimt case is not the only art heist headline to make waves in recent weeks.
