Artadia Reveals 2021 Los Angeles Awardees<\/i>
\nThe nonprofit grant-making organization Artadia has named\u00a0Adee Roberson<\/b>,\u00a0Paul Sepuya<\/b>,\u00a0<\/b>and\u00a0Sichong Xie<\/b>\u00a0as its 2021 Los Angeles awardees. Roberson and Sepuya will each receive $10,000 in unrestricted funds, and Xie will get an unrestricted $25,000 prize as the Marciano Art Foundation Artadia Awardee. The awardees were named following a jury process and virtual studio visits conducted by Taylor Renee Aldridge, visual arts curator at the California African American Museum in Los Angeles, and Beth Malone, an independent curator and the executive director of the arts nonprofit Dashboard in Atlanta.<\/div>\n

Timothy Taylor\u00a0Now Represents Chris Martin<\/i>
\nTimothy Taylor<\/b>, a gallery with spaces in\u00a0<\/b>London and New York, will now represent artist Chris Martin in collaboration with David Kordansky Gallery in Los Angeles and Anton Kern Gallery in New York. Over the past four decades,\u00a0<\/b>Martin has become known for his paintings using bold hues. Folk music, the art of Georgia O\u2019Keeffe, and the poetry of Allen Ginsburg have also been reference points for his photographic collages.\u00a0His work has been featured in solo exhibitions at institutions worldwide, including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, and Douglas Hyde Gallery in Dublin.\u00a0Timothy Taylor will present an exhibition of new paintings by Martin at its London space in May 2022.<\/p>\n

Artist Turi Simeti Has Died at Age 91<\/i>
\nTuri Simeti<\/b>, who is best known for his minimalist paintings, has died at age 91. The news was announced by Simeti\u2019s gallery, Almine Rech. The artist was born in Sicily in 1929, and he first exhibited his art alongside the work of artists associated with the \u201cArt Informel\u201d movement of the 1940s and \u201950s. When Simeti moved from Rome to Milan in the \u201960s, he began making the works he would become widely recognized for: monochromatic canvases with mysterious, protruding elements. In recent years, the artist had solo exhibitions at the Museo delle Arti di Catanzaro in Italy, Leeahn Gallery in Seoul, Almine Rech in Brussels, and other venues.<\/p>\n

Erin Cluley Gallery\u00a0Opens Second Location<\/i>
\nErin Cluley Gallery<\/b>\u00a0has announced the the launch of\u00a0Cluley Projects<\/b>, its second location in Dallas. The space will open April 17 with an exhibition of work by Dallas-based artist\u00a0Xxavier Edward Carter.\u00a0The Dallas location will focus on regional artists lacking representation and will dedicate exhibition space to independent curatorial projects. Artists from Erin Cluley Gallery\u2019s main roster will also have the opportunity to showcase more experimental bodies of work in the space.<\/p>\n

Whitney Restaurant Untitled to Shutter<\/i>
\nUntitled<\/b>, the Union Square Hospitality Group restaurant that has been attached to the\u00a0Whitney Museum<\/b>\u00a0for just under a decade, will permanently shut down, according to a report in\u00a0Curbed<\/i><\/a>. The museum will convert the space into a pop-up restaurant for grab-and-go prepared foods called the Whitney Cafe.<\/p>\n

Barbara Davis Gallery Now Represents Anna Mavromatis<\/i>
\nBarbara Davis Gallery<\/b>\u00a0in Houston, Texas, has added artist\u00a0Anna Mavromatis<\/b>\u00a0to its roster. Mavromatis, who centers printmaking in her practice, is best known for her intricately rendered monotypes, collages, and mixed media works that take the form of dresses.<\/p>\n

Naudline Pierre Joins James Cohan<\/i>
\nPainter\u00a0Naudline Pierre<\/b>\u00a0has joined the New York\u2013based gallery\u00a0James Cohan<\/b>, where she will have a solo exhibition in April 2022. Pierre\u2019s paintings vibrant figurative paintings are often informed by mythological and fantastical subjects. The artist, who participated in the 2019\u201320 Studio Museum in Harlem\u2019s artists-in-residence program, also frequently draws inspiration from Renaissance compositions. She will open her first solo museum exhibition at the Dallas Museum of Art in September, and in October, she will show work at the Prospect New Orleans biennial.<\/p>\n

Denny Dimin Gallery Now Represents Sheida Soleimani\u00a0<\/i>
\nDenny Dimin Gallery,<\/b>\u00a0which has spaces in New York and Hong Kong, has added\u00a0Sheida Soleimani<\/b>\u00a0to its roster. The daughter of political refugees who fled Iran in the mid-1980s, Soleimani works at the intersection of art and activism. Her practice melds sculpture, collage, and photography, and references the complexities of Iran\u2019s current sociopolitical affairs. Soleimani, who is based in Providence, Rhode Island, first exhibited with Denny Dimin in 2020, following presentations with Edel Assanti and Harlan Levey Projects.<\/p>\n

Various Small Fires Adds Gina Beavers<\/i>
\nThe Los Angeles\u2013based\u00a0Various Small Fires\u00a0<\/b>now represents\u00a0Gina Beavers<\/b>\u00a0in Asia, following a solo exhibition of her work at the gallery\u2019s Seoul branch. She will retain representation with Marianne Boesky Gallery, of New York and Aspen.\u00a0Beavers\u2019s visceral paintings appropriate imagery from social media\u2014makeup tutorials, celebrity snapshots, and \u201cfood porn,\u201d most recently\u2014to comment on the strange nature of digital content. Expo Chicago Announces Exhibitors and Virtual Program\u00a0<\/i>
\nExpo Chicago<\/b>\u00a0has announced the exhibitors for its online edition, which will run from April 8 through 12. The online fair will feature 81 local, regional, national, and international exhibitors, as well as a virtual program of panels, lectures, and performances. Smack Mellon Appoints Curator and Director of Exhibitions<\/i>
\nThe Brooklyn-based arts nonprofit\u00a0Smack Mellon<\/b>\u00a0has named\u00a0Rachel Vera Steinberg<\/b>\u00a0curator and director of exhibitions. Steinberg served as director of the artist-run nonprofit SOHO20 Artists Inc. in Brooklyn from 2015 to 2018, and prior to that she was assistant director at the since closed NURTUREart Gallery, another nonprofit in Brooklyn. Steinberg is also the cofounder of the online platform Blade Study.<\/p>\n

Bradley, who recently\u00a0joined\u00a0Lisson Gallery, is currently the subject of a solo show at the Museum of Modern Art co-organized with the Studio Museum in Harlem.\u00a0Time\u00a0<\/i>focuses on Fox Rich, an abolitionist activist, and her attempts to get her husband out of prison; Bradley won the directing award for it at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival.<\/p>\n

Longtime Director of\u00a0Kimbell Art Museum<\/a>\u2019s Conservation Department to Leave<\/i>
\nClaire M. Barry<\/b>\u00a0will step down as director of the conservation department of Fort Worth\u2019s\u00a0Kimbell Art Museum<\/b>\u00a0at the end of this month. Barry will continue to collaborate with the museum on a consultative basis before transitioning to the position of director of conservation emerita on April 1. Barry helmed the Kimbell\u2019s conservation team for over 30 years, launching an initiative that saw a collaboration between the Kimbell and the Amon Carter Museum of American Art during that time.<\/p>\n

San Diego Art Institute and Lux Art Institute to Merge<\/i>
\nThe\u00a0San Diego Art Institute<\/b>\u00a0in Balboa Park, California, and the\u00a0Lux Art Institute<\/b>\u00a0in Encinitas, California, have revealed that they will merge to form the\u00a0Institute of Contemporary Art, San Diego<\/b>. Opening in September, the museum will span both institutions\u2019 campuses and it will be helmed by Lux Art Institute director Andrew Utt. According to a\u00a0report<\/a>\u00a0by the\u00a0San Diego Union-Tribune<\/i>, the ICA San Diego will have an annual budget of $1.6 million.<\/p>\n

K\u00f6nig Galerie Now Represents Mona Ardeleanu<\/i>
\nArtist\u00a0Mona Ardeleanu<\/b>\u00a0has joined\u00a0K\u00f6nig Galerie<\/b>\u00a0in Berlin, where she will open a solo exhibition on April 29. Ardeleanu is known for her painted fabric works that take on illusionistic, sculptural forms. The announcement follows news that the dealer Johann K\u00f6nig\u00a0will inaugurate<\/a>\u00a0a new space in Seoul this spring.<\/p>\n
