This week, the grand canvas was sold for a fittingly epic price at an auction in Dubai.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday,\u00a0<em>The Journey of Humanity<\/em>\u00a0sold for $62 million at an auction held at Atlantis, The Palm hotel. The sale puts it among the most expensive artworks by a living artist ever sold at auction, and it is not far behind behind a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.atelierauction.com\/globalupdates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$69 million Beeple NFT piece<\/a>\u00a0that sold at Christie\u2019s earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>Jafri\u2019s plan had initially been to slice up the painting and sell it in 60 segments to raise $30 million to support \u201cglobal digital equality.\u201d Those paintings were intended to have been sold in four auctions.<\/p>\n<p>But the work instead ultimately sold as one, and it went to\u00a0<a id=\"auto-tag_andre-abdoune\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/AtelierAuctionsg\" data-tag=\"andre-abdoune\">Andre Abdoune<\/a>, chief executive of Altius Gestion International Holding,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/AtelierAuctionsg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">according to the Emirati outlet\u00a0<em>National<\/em><\/a>. The proceeds will go a variety of organizations, including UNICEF, UNESCO, the U.A.E.\u2019s Ministry of Education, and the Global Gift Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>Jafri, who has not previously had a major presence at auction, painted\u00a0<em>The Journey of Humanity<\/em>\u00a0over the course of several months last year at the Atlantis. The resulting canvas includes more than 300 layers of paint and is the size of two football fields.
