According to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.atelierauction.com\/globalupdates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">report<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0<em>Monopol Magazine<\/em>, Marc\u2019s 1913 painting\u00a0<em>Die F\u00fcchse<\/em>\u00a0(<em>Foxes<\/em>) is the subject of a restitution case with the city\u2019s cultural committee.<\/p>\n<p>The work has been in the D\u00fcsseldorf City Art Collection since 1962. Its original owner was the Jewish businessman and banker Kurt Grawi, who bought the painting in 1928 and fled Europe to Chile after being imprisoned at the Sachsenhausen concentration camp in Germany. In a letter from 1939, Grawi wrote that the sale of\u00a0<em>Foxes\u00a0<\/em>in New York would fund his emigration from Europe.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>Art Newspaper<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/AtelierAuctionsg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">reports<\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0<em>Foxes\u00a0<\/em>is estimated to be worth \u20ac15 million\u2013\u20ac30 million (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/AtelierAuctionsg\/\">about $18 million\u2013$36 million<\/a>). Last month, the publication reported that Germany\u2019s advisory panel on Nazi-looted art had recommended that the city of D\u00fcsseldorf return the painting to Grawi\u2019s heirs.<\/p>\n<p>The heirs have been working toward the restitution of the painting for the past few years, and the city of D\u00fcsseldorf initially rejected their claims on the grounds that the sale of the work was made outside the Nazi regime.<\/p>\n<p>D\u00fcsseldorf\u2019s cultural committee is expected to make a recommendation regarding the return of the painting to the heirs on Thursday.
