Peter Van de Moortel Named Chief Conservator at Kimbell Art Museum<\/i>
\nThe\u00a0Kimbell Art Museum\u00a0<\/b>in Fort Worth, Texas, has appointed\u00a0Peter Van de Moorte<\/b>l as chief conservator. Van de Moortel previously served as the former associate conservator for paintings at the Kimbell Art Museum. Prior to joining the Kimbell, Van de Moortel was a fellow in the conservation department at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He has also overseen the preservation and conservation of works at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, and other institutions and private collections.<\/p>\n

Patron Gallery Moves To New Chicago Space<\/i>
\nThe Chicago-based gallery\u00a0Patron<\/b>\u00a0has moved to a new location in the Windy City. The 5,000-square-foot space at 1612 West Chicago Avenue, in the city\u2019s West Town gallery district, is within walking distance of galleries such as Rhona Hoffman and Mariane Ibrahim. The new space opens on April 22 with a solo exhibition of work by\u00a0Jamal Cyrus<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Bamako Encounters Announces 2021 Curatorial Team, Theme<\/i>
\nThe\u00a0Bamako Encounters \u2013 African Biennale of Photography\u00a0<\/b>in Mali has announced the curatorial team and theme for its upcoming 13th edition, which will run from November 20, 2021 to January 20, 2022.\u00a0Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung<\/b>\u00a0will return to the biennial as its artistic director. His curatorial team will include\u00a0Akinbode Akinbiyi<\/b>, artist and independent curator;\u00a0Meriem Berrada<\/b>, artistic director of Museum of African Contemporary Art Al Maaden (MACAAL) in Marrakech;\u00a0Tandazani Dhlakama<\/b>, assistant curator at Zeitz MOCAA in Cape Town; and\u00a0Liz Ikiriko<\/b>, artist and assistant curator at Art Gallery York University in Toronto. This edition of the exhibition will carry the theme\u00a0\u201cMaa ka Maaya ka ca a yere kono: On Multiplicity, Difference, Becoming, and Heritage,\u201d\u00a0and it will \u201cpay a powerful tribute to the spaces in between, to that which defies definition, to phases of transition, to being this and that or neither and both, to becoming, and to difference and divergence in all their shades,\u201d according to a press release. \u201cMaa ka Maaya ka ca a yere kono\u201d translates to \u201cThe persons of the person are multiple in the person,\u201d and is drawn from a 1972 statement by Malian writer and historian Amadou Hamp\u00e2t\u00e9 B\u00e2. The curators will also include selections from an open-call in the exhibition.<\/p>\n

Kurimanzutto Adds Roberto Gil de Montes to its Roster<\/i>
\nKurimanzutto<\/b>, which maintains spaces in Mexico City and New York, now represents\u00a0Roberto Gil de Montes<\/b>. Mexico-born and Los Angeles\u2013raised, Gil de Montes creates irreverent, symbolic scenes about the mundanity of everyday life. His work spans painting, photography, sculpture, and ceramics, and it often draws on Mexican traditional art and popular culture. Kurimanzutto will be debuting new paintings by Roberto Gil de Montes at Frieze New York from May 5 through 9.<\/p>\n

\nTanya Bonakdar Gallery<\/b>\u00a0in New York has added artist\u00a0Sherrill Roland<\/b>\u00a0to its roster. Roland\u2019s interdisciplinary practice addresses themes of innocence, identity, and community within the context of the American criminal justice system. Roland spent 10 months in prison following a wrongful conviction, and after his exoneration, he turned to drawing, sculpture, and performance to process the cost of the experience. A recipient of the Creative Capital Award earlier this year, his work has shown at the Studio Museum in Harlem, the San Jose Museum of Art, and the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, among elsewhere. He will have his first solo exhibition with Tanya Bonakdar Gallery in 2022.<\/p>\n

ChertL\u00fcdde Now Represents Tyra Tingleff\u00a0<\/i>
\nChertL\u00fcdde<\/b>\u00a0gallery in Berlin now represents painter\u00a0Tyra Tingleff<\/b>. Living between Oslo and Berlin, Tingleff creates abstract paintings that emphasize movement and bold color. Solo and group exhibitions have been held at SALTS in Basel,\u00a0the Kunsthall Oslo, RH Contemporary Art in New York. Marianne Boesky Gallery Now Represents Celeste Rapone<\/i>
\nMarianne Boesky Gallery<\/b>, which has locations in New York and Aspen, now represents\u00a0Celeste Rapone<\/b>\u00a0in partnership with Corbett vs. Dempsey in Chicago and Josh Lilley in London. Magdalena Campos-Pons Awarded P\u00e9rez Prize<\/i>
\nThe\u00a0P\u00e9rez Art Museum Miami<\/b>\u00a0has awarded Cuban artist\u00a0Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons<\/b>\u00a0its third annual\u00a0P\u00e9rez Prize,<\/b>\u00a0which carries an unrestricted $50,000 award. A descendant of Nigerians who were brought to Cuba as slaves during the 19th century, Campos-Pons\u2019s work centers themes at the intersection of race, religion, gender, and shared histories. Her practice spans photography, painting, sculpture, film, video, and performance. Campos-Pons most recently spearheaded\u00a0When We Gather<\/em>, a multi-part project by seven women artists of color responding to the historic election of Kamala Harris as the first woman of color to be Vice President. Inspired by the Yoruba religious rituals of her childhood, the work captures the artist\u2019s interest in the traditions and rituals of her ancestors.<\/p>\n

American Folk Art Museum Receives Gift of Portraits\u00a0<\/i>
\nThe\u00a0American Folk Art Museum<\/b>\u00a0in New York has received a promised gift of two portraits by\u00a0John Brewster Jr.<\/b>\u00a0from trustee Karin Barter Fielding and her husband, Dr. Jonathan Fielding, in honor of AFAM\u2019s 60th anniversary. Brewster, a deaf itinerant painter, captured scenes from America in a style that became widely adopted in New England. The portraits depict Deacon Benjamin Titcomb and his Wife Ann Pearson Titcomb, residents of Maine. These are the first portraits by Brewster to enter the museum\u2019s collection, following the solo exhibition of the artist, \u201cA Deaf Artist in Early America: The Worlds of John Brewster Jr.\u201d<\/p>\n

Company Gallery Will Move to New Space This Fall<\/i>

Labor Board Sides with Portland Museum in Union Proceedings<\/i>
\nThe\u00a0National Labor Relations Board<\/b>\u00a0has said that members of the security department at the\u00a0Portland Museum of Art<\/b>\u00a0in Maine counted as security workers and therefore were ineligible to join a proposed union at the the institution. A vote on unionization had been set for December, but it was delayed after the museum claimed that some workers who had taken part in unionization efforts could be considered ineligible. Votes cast by eligible employees in December will now be counted.<\/p>\n

Taymour Grahne Projects<\/a>\u00a0to Open Second London Space<\/i>
\nThe London-based gallery\u00a0Taymour Grahne Projects<\/b>, which focuses on emerging, mid-career, and historically overlooked artists, will open a second space in the British capital in May. Located in Notting Hill, the two-floor space is a 15-minute walk away from the gallery\u2019s first location, which opened in September. The inaugural exhibition at the new space will showcase work by London-based artist\u00a0Evie O\u2019Connor<\/b>.<\/p>\n
