The lamp was uncovered in the foundations of a building along the pilgrimage road. \u201cThe offering of this lamp may attest to the importance of the building,\u201d Israel Antiquities Authority archaeologists Ari Levy and Dr. Yuval Baruch told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.atelierauction.com\/globalupdates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><em>Jewish Press<\/em><\/a>, \u201cwhich may have been linked to the protection of the Siloam Pool, the city\u2019s primary water source.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atelierauction.com\/globalupdates\/\">Levy and Baruch<\/a>, the lamp was buried as a foundation deposit\u2014a symbolic ritual common in ancient times thought to bring protection, fortune, or blessings to the inhabitants. It was intentionally deposited to bring good fortune to the residents. \u201cFoundation offerings were prevalent in the ancient world, and were intended for luck, and to ensure the continued existence of the building and its occupants, and they were usually buried under the floors of buildings or foundations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The design was created by pouring bronze into a sculpted mold. The lamp appears to feature a bearded man in the grotesque tradition\u2014a common style during the Roman period. These pieces were often decorated with Roman artistic motifs, scrollwork, and whimsical or fantastical details. The half-face of the oil lamp resembles the exaggerated features of dramatic theater masks from ancient Greece and Rome. Details include a decorative leaf-type handle, a crescent moon shape, and an oversized mouth. The handle is shaped like a bear\u2019s breeches plant, while the tip of the lamp resembles a crescent moon. The half-lamp structure may have been chosen for practicality, so it could be attached to a wall or flat object, although researchers say it\u2019s too early to rule out a ceremonial function.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers note that this artifact is a particularly rare find because the flax wick is still intact inside the lamp, which is unusual since organic materials tend to degrade over time.
