Stay tuned as each city joins related reports from Seoul and Paris\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.atelierauction.com\/globalupdates\">online<\/a>\u00a0in the weeks to come.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A city whose people are known for quickly and continually adapting to changing circumstances, Bogot\u00e1 has long been home to major artists, including Beatriz Gonz\u00e1lez and Doris Salcedo, who have poignantly reflected on the many hardships and atrocities that have marked Colombia\u2019s history. In the past, the artist community operated mainly by way of underground platforms, from artist-run spaces to bars to parties and other events that bring the city\u2019s scene together. Since the start of the pandemic, several neighborhood galleries have banded together with others across both city and country to form the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atelierauction.com\/globalupdates\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>Asociaci\u00f3n de Galer\u00edas de Arte de Colombia<\/b><\/span><\/a><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0to advocate for their needs, including lowering taxes on art imports, exports, and sales.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">One of the pioneering galleries in San Felipe is\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\"><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atelierauction.com\/globalupdates\">Instituto de Visi\u00f3n<\/a>,<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0which was born in the spirit of resilience that is crucial to Colombia. \u201cWe\u2019re a city and a country so used to crisis that we adapt very fast,\u201d said Beatriz L\u00f3pez, who cofounded the gallery with Karen Abreu and Omayra Alvarado. They took the gallery name from a photographic series by Nicol\u00e1s Consuegra that documents the fading names of now-defunct businesses\u2014with one image showing the ghostly words \u201cInstituto de Visi\u00f3n\u201d on an old stone facade.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">When they opened in 2014, L\u00f3pez and her partners sited the gallery in a house\u2014as opposed to a traditional white cube\u2014in a working-class neighborhood with woodworking and auto shops nearby. Other galleries followed, eventually numbering into the dozens. But the collective idea has been to maintain an organic feel. \u201cWe\u2019ve been working hard not to overwhelm the community and to work with the community,\u201d L\u00f3pez said. It was important to open spaces that didn\u2019t try to join forces of assumed elegance or assumed aesthetics of good and bad taste.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The gallery\u2019s \u201cVisionaries\u201d program focuses on Latin American artists who have been overlooked, such as Miguel \u00c1ngel C\u00e1rdenas\u2014a pioneering performance and video artist who was born and educated in Colombia but left in the 1960s over difficulties in creating work marked\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">by a queer sensibility and an interest in sexuality in an extremely Catholic country. The work is a grid of various drawings.\" width=\"1024\" height=\"678\" data-lazy-loaded=\"true\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"c-figcaption lrv-u-font-size-12 lrv-u-flex lrv-u-flex-direction-column lrv-u-padding-tb-025\"><span class=\"lrv-u-font-size-14@desktop\"><a id=\"auto-tag_casas-riegner\" href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/t\/casas-riegner\/\" data-tag=\"casas-riegner\">Casas Riegner<\/a>\u00a0gallery has exhibited Luis Rold\u00e1n\u2019s\u00a0<em>Cuenca<\/em>\u00a0(2018) at\u00a0<a id=\"auto-tag_artbo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/t\/artbo\/\" data-tag=\"artbo\">ArtBo<\/a>.<\/span><cite class=\"lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase lrv-u-color-grey\">COURTESY ARTBO<\/cite><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Established Local Art Fair: ArtBo<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Unlike art fairs run as private businesses that look to assemble galleries from around the world, ArtBo is run by Bogot\u00e1\u2019s nonprofit Chamber of Commerce as a way to help promote commercial activity in the city. \u201cFrom its inception,\u00a0<b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atelierauction.com\/globalupdates\">ArtBo<\/a>\u00a0<\/b>was constructed [to serve and stimulate] the whole community,\u201d said Mar\u00eda Paz Gaviria, ArtBo director.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Since its inauguration in 2004, ArtBo has helped professionalize the city\u2019s art scene, and grown a local collector base practically from scratch, in Latin America and internationally. Typical editions of the midsize fair attract some 70 exhibitors from more than 15 countries in Latin America and beyond, focusing in particular on emerging and mid-tier galleries. An Arte Camera section in recent editions has been devoted to Colombian artists without commercial representation, who apply via an open-call system. (After the past three editions, the government agency Idartes collaborated with ArtBo to award one of the artists featured in Arte Camera a residency space to develop a new project.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">In concert with ArtBo, a citywide initiative called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/AtelierAuctionsg\"><b>ArtBo Fin de Semana<\/b><\/a>\u00a0(Spanish for \u201cweekend\u201d) offers a range of events, exhibitions, and activities that ties the fair to area galleries, museums, and other institutions. Rodriguez, who has headed Idartes through three administrations, developed a set of grant programs with a goal toward \u201ccreating conditions so artists and organizations can develop\u201d in areas as wide-ranging as mounting exhibitions and funding research. Idartes also manages an exhibition space called\u00a0<b>Galer\u00eda Santa Fe<\/b>\u00a0in the historic downtown La Candelaria neighborhood, with a program that provides funding for artist projects and an annual Luis Caballero Award that gives a mid-career artist around $12,000 and an exhibition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Another important supporter of the arts is the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/AtelierAuctionsg\"><b>Banco de la Rep\u00fablica<\/b><\/a>, Colombia\u2019s central bank, which has been a major collector and exhibition venue of Colombian art for the past 50 years. The bank\u2019s involvement with the arts dates back to 1957, when it hosted a modern art salon, and led to a collection of more than 6,000 works. The bank\u2019s museums mount shows that delve into the collection\u2019s holdings, including recent acquisitions, and organize biennial retrospectives of major Colombian artists that exhibit nationally and travel to venues like MALBA in Buenos Aires and Jeu de Paume in Paris.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Maria Wills Londo\u00f1o, director of arts museums of Banco de la Rep\u00fablica, said, \u201cBanco de la Rep\u00fablica, being a public institution, has considered culture a central pillar of philanthropy and of the conservation of cultural heritage.
